چکیده

We study trie effect of limite system size on trie tension r of a three-phase contact fine. This is especially important in systems with forces that are sufliciently long-ranged for r to diverge in trie thermodynamic Iimit. Near wetting phase transitions we propose an anisotropic finite-size scaling hypothesis, which takes into account trie elfect of thermal capillary-wave fluctuations. Trie singular behaviour of r near a first-order wettiJ~g transition is aJ~alyzed. Scaling functions are calculated explicitly in the mean-field regime, which includes trie physically most common systems with van der Waals forces m dimension d = 3. There bas recently been considerable work on trie fine tension r associated with a three-phase

Wavevector Scaling, Surface Critical Behavior, and Wetting in the 2-d, 3-State Chiral Clock Model

The controversial 2-d, 3-state chiral Ports model is studied using transfer matrix finite size scaling. At A =0, we find dqN/dA ocN -4/5, where q is the "wavevector," A the chiral field, and N the strip width (N=4-10). The result is consistent with den Nijs's crossover exponent q~ = 1/6. With surface fields on the infinite free boundaries, exponents associated with bulk magnetization Yu, surfac...

Marangoni and temperature dependent wetting phenomena in picoliter size solder droplet deposition

The effect of the temperature dependence of surface tension (Marangoni effect) and of the wetting phenomenon on the spreading and final post-solidification shape of a molten Sn63Pb solder droplet deposited on a flat substrate is investigated. A Lagrangian finite element formulation of the complete axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations is utilized for the description of the droplet behavior. Line...

Instantons and Surface Tension at a First-order Transition

We study the dynamics of the first order phase transition in the two dimensional 15-state Potts model, both at and off equilibrium. We find that phase changes take place through nucleation in both cases, and finite volume effects are described well through an instanton computation. Thus a dynamical measurement of the surface tension is possible. We find that the order-disorder surface tension i...

Finite-size-scaling functions for 3d O(4) and O(2) spin models and QCD

We calculate numerically universal finite-size-scaling functions for the three-dimensional O(4) and O(2) models. The approach of these functions to the infinite-volume scaling functions is studied in detail on the critical and pseudocritical lines. For this purpose we determine the pseudocritical line in two different ways. We find that the asymptotic form of the finite-size-scaling functions i...

Elastocapillary deformations on partially-wetting substrates: rival contact-line models.

A partially-wetting liquid can deform the underlying elastic substrate upon which it rests. This situation requires the development of theoretical models to describe the wetting forces imparted by the drop onto the solid substrate, particularly those at the contact-line. We construct a general solution using a displacement potential function for the elastic deformations within a finite elastic ...
